Ash Wednesday, a national holiday here...also marks for the heathen and Rastaman, Bob Marley's 63rd were he still alive.
HBD Bob!
If you wish to explore current Carib music...check out "Soca" or specific artists from Cuba, Trinidad, Barbados, or smaller artists from all around the region. Looking up Soca on wikipedia gets you started. Great stuff. Oh Cuba. What a place...I love it site-unseen from all I've heard and listened to...hope I get closer than 33,000 feet in overflight.
The largest influence on music in the CI is Xydeco or Zydeco...Cajun Louisiana music. Remember that Caymanian men manned the oil fields and river/Panamanian freighters that built New Orleans. Cayman's Delta blues links and Delta-styled Gospel fundamentalism also are of a Louisiana/Mississippi sort. To find Caymanians in a group in the U.S....check out Port Arthur Texas. There are direct flights to Houston that are often filled more with Caymanians than Americans.
Miami = dark skin, music, food, vice, style...fun. Houston = megachurches, Jesus-cults, C&W music and beef, and the Caribbean of steel ships and iron men.
