Not impressive in their ruins, but grand enough to mark a great civilization, Tulum was thriving in 800AD. By the time the Toltecs conquered the Mayans, they merged to create a violent people who eventually destroyed their own high culture...which shattered at its ends to the Spanish. Still the visiting Spanish compared the lofty and painted Tulum favorably to their own grandest cities of the day.
