The Cayman Beep

Grand Cayman isn't as slow as Cayman Brac, but you'd be a liar if you claimed it was high stress. Still, there's a fair amount of beeping as one drives around. Beep, beep...always beeping. Why? It's a way to say Hi! to pedestrian friends spotted in town. All the Philippinoes know each other, so that means a lot of beeps. Jamaicans same. Haitians, of course. Trinidadians, yep. Church members...bar mates... all the identities of life are met with beeps.

There are hitchhikers. Never picked one up before but I picked up an old Haitian lady cause she looked tired and sad. Two other times I have been flagged down by older Caymanian ladies...once in West Bay and once near George Town. One needed a new bic lighter. The other had diabetes and her legs hurt. She was going to the Seventh Day Adventists house for a nutritionist meeting. She said she had too much cake over Christmas.

Not poor...sort of like old Mt. Healthy. People just living. Lots of porch sitting in the Caymans. You sit in a white Kennedy rocker with your back to the wall "so you don't ha' ta worrrry 'bout wud comms up behin' you."
