I think I got it backward somewhere in here...
What the facts are is that one says..."The Cayman Islands are..."
This is like the U.S. prior to the Civil War when it was more British despite the two wars.
In British English one says "the team are playing well today." In most cases, definite nouns that represent many individuals use a plural verb.
I think I have it right now.
